CHAPTER 14: DETECTIVE AGENCY

Work at the detective agency was interesting and kept Marc’s thoughts occupied by engaging his puzzle-solving skills. He loved solving a good mystery: missing persons, insurance fraud, domestic abuse, skip-tracing, and adulterous affairs. There seemed to be no end to the work. His office was plush and had a small conference table for meetings and a decent library of reference books, some of which he collected, and some Ohio law books that were provided to him by the agency.

Every Monday morning, Marc sat at his office, reading his weekly briefing to prepare his schedule when his intercom beeped, and he pressed the acknowledge button, “Yes?”

“Detective Ryan, Miss Ashworth would like to speak to you if you’re available,” Chuck said.

“I’m free, send her in please,” Marc replied and got up to open the door.

“Good morning, detective,” Brooke said as she walked into the office, both hands in her lab coat pockets. “Sleep well?”

“Miss Ashworth, what a pleasant surprise,” Marc joked as he leaned against his desk. “Fortunately, everything was quiet last night. Do you think it’s a good sign?”

“Hard to tell,” Brooke said, “I wonder if it’s the calm before the storm.”

“Let’s hope not. So, what did you think about the meeting?” Marc wondered. “Give me your honest opinion.”

“I have to admit. It wasn’t what I expected, other than the medium. It’s just that I’ve never seen someone in a trance like that. I was surprised, though, that the rest of the team seemed pretty rational about the whole thing. If I didn’t know what the subject was, I’d say the whole approach was logical. The fact that you were there that night makes me confident that the whole thing

is legit.”

“Do you think that thing followed me home somehow?” Marc wondered.

“I guess it’s possible. I don’t know enough about the subject. Promise me you will not let your guard down.”

“Don’t worry, not a chance. By the way, today is Ellie’s birthday, but I have no idea what to get her,” Marc said.

“Any ideas?”

“How about a puppy?” Brooke suggested, “There’s an animal shelter nearby, I can get you the address. One of my friends works there. I can call her if you want; she can speed up the adoption process,” Brook winked.

“That’s a great idea. Maybe a pet will help comfort Ellie and take her mind off things. I’ve been so distracted with all of this – I usually don’t wait until the last minute. I should have taken care of her birthday stuff days ago,” Marc said, feeling guilty.

“Don’t be so hard on yourself. Remember that it’s because of the kids that you are doing everything you can to protect them,” Brooke reminded him.

“Yeah, you’re right. We’re having a small party for Ellie this evening. Aunt Mary is cooking, Brian will be there, and some of Ellie’s friends from school. You’re welcome to stop over if

you like.”

“I wouldn’t miss it,” Brooke said.

“We better get back to work, see you this evening then,” Marc said and turned back to his case files.
